THE SUMMER SLIDE

Ah! Summer is almost here. In fact, Summer at Hockaday opens in just 30 days. Thoughts of summer are running through your child’s head as they countdown the days to the last day of school – thoughts of sleeping in, family vacation, time with friends, and pool time. Maybe even a trip to their favorite waterpark with the biggest, fastest SLIDE! I would be willing to bet, however, their version of the SUMMER SLIDE and my version of the SUMMER SLIDE are quite different!

Studies show that students lose a percentage of their academic skills during summer vacation. Teachers spend a portion of the back-to-school season reteaching skills from the previous year. Wouldn’t it be nice if your child started the school year in a progression instead of playing catch up?

Summer at Hockaday offers coed students, entering 5th through 10th grade, the opportunity to keep their math & writing skills fresh through the Summer Math & Writing Institute. Students are evaluated on the first day of class to determine strengths and weaknesses in math. Based on the evaluation, students begin individualized instruction in math that is progressive in nature throughout the two-week session. The Summer Math & Writing Institute occurs in three, two-week sessions. Students who attend multiple sessions will experience a continued progression in the curriculum. A full-day program, the Summer Math & Writing Institute schedule includes a math course, a writing course, and an elective of the student’s choosing.

Don’t let the SUMMER SLIDE find its way into your home. This is a chance for your child to sharpen his/her math and writing skills in an encouraging environment on a beautiful campus with awesome classmates and teachers!
